I planted an Elder tree
It was a lovely sunny morning yesterday, so I planted an Elder tree (Sambucus nigra ‘Black Lace’). Likely it will die back and will not attain the heights it is supposed to if it was in a zone 4 or higher garden. That is fine with me – I love the lacy black foliage and…

On Blue Gentians
During these late August days, one of my favourite plants in bloom are the blue Gentians (Gentiana septemfida var. lagodechiana), pictured at right. As soon as the sun appears – and that has been a scarce commodity for the past week – the blooms open and I can’t get enough of them. The blue is…

The Beckoning Burnet
There is something that’s draws the eye to the graceful, arching stems of Great Burnet (Sanguisorba officinalis). I find it baffling that they are not a common sight in gardens I’ve visited. From late July into the fall, my two Burnet plants blossom profusely. They have narrow, serrated , deep-green leaves. To date, they have…

Up popped the mushrooms
I guess this is what happens when one isn’t looking too closely in the garden. Since I’ve been sick with an infection for several days now, I haven’t paid much attention to the goings-on in my garden. Today my eye was drawn to this large white blob sticking out of the patch of thyme. For…

I wish I was the moon tonight
We really haven’t had much rain in the past month, which I realised today has cut into my reading time. Most days, with the sun shining, I want to be outside working on the garage wall or gardening. So today I had an opportunity to curl up on the couch and read. And because I’m…

Meadowrue morning
It was a lovely garden morning – my favourite meadowrue is blooming and the sun was trying to shine. I came across a morning glory blooming in the dirt pile beside my garage. When I was on my way to the lake a few days’ ago, I stepped into the car to discover this grasshopper…

A ‘Heavenly Blue’ Day
There was a treat in store for me this morning – two Heavenly Blue Morning Glories vines were in bloom. I was surprised to find them in bloom this early considering that last year, these vines did not start blooming till late August. I suppose it has something to do with the incredibly hot stretches…

My garden lets me breathe
I can grow roses, lilies and evening-scented stocks. I can marvel at the flowers slowly taking shape on my blue wall. I can blend colours with abandon and smudge away the sad memories. I can dream of a time when someone will come along and hold my hand and love me just as I am.
